* Scuttlebut & Memories *

My time,
on the Haynsworth,
was pretty busy

Mediterranean Tours
Two 7 month tours to the Mediterranean and Mid-East (including 12 transits of the Suez Canal) besides the Mediterranean Sea, we had extended stints in the Persian Gulf, Black Sea, Red Sea, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea.

Shellback, Crossing The Equator
Became a "Shellback: by crossing the equator in the Indian Ocean to deliver 50 tons of dried milk, in a relief effort, to Mombasa, Kenya. Spent two Christmases in Africa.

No Liberty
Because of the explosive political situation in the region the Haynsworth had to pass up a liberty visit to both Beirut, Lebanon and Rhodes, Greece.

Jumped Overboard
One of our mail clerks jumped overboard in the Black Sea and we had to do a 180 to rescue him, all while we were being followed by two Russian Destroyers and a Russian Sub. He was sea sick all the time and just gave up. I found out months later that he was working as a mailman in Philadelphia, PA

Cuban Missile Crisis
Participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis blockade.

3 Day Monster Storm
Survived a 3 day monster storm, in March in the North Atlantic, while returning from our 1st trip to the Med/Mid East. Waves exceeded 35-40 feet and we could see the screws on the aircraft carrier accompanying us home. We were taking green water over the Bridge, lost all our life lines, our motor launch was ripped off its boat davits and lost, and rivets were missing from the deck at midships. We looked like a garbage barge when we finally pulled into Norfolk.
