Memorial
In Honor of Captain Cal Dean Hill, Jr.
Letter from Howard Hill, son of Captain Cal Dean Hill, Jr.
My name is Howard Hill and my father, Cal Dean Hill, Jr., received your newsletter from the USS Haynsworth organization for many years. Sadly, my father passed away in May 2017 and so can be removed from your mailing list.

For a number of years in the mid-1960's the USS Haynsworth was assigned to the Navy Reserve fleet and was based in Galveston, Texas along with DE 252, USS Howard D. Crow. My dad was both the Executive Officer, and then took command of the ship in July 1968. Though he never said, I'm sure it was one of the proudest moments of his life. Dad served as captain for 2 years, until July 1970 when the Haynsworth was decommissioned and the USS Ault, DD 698 took its place in Galveston. Dad also commanded the Ault for some time.

As a kid I have very fond memories of going to Galveston the 'meet the ship' whenever Dad was off on the annual training cruise, or just a reserve weekend. It was also a real treat for a kid to go on the annual Dependent's Cruise. I'm attaching a few photos from the July 20, 1968 Dependent's Cruise, which was also the day of the change-of-command ceremony when Dad became the ship's captain.

Dad took great pride in his navy service and always appreciated connection to the various organizations of the ships he served on. These included the USS Rodman, DMS 21, USS Haas, USS Wren, DD568 and, of course, the Haynsworth and Ault.

Thanks! Howard
Captain Cal Dean Hill, Jr. ~ Obituary
Cal Dean Hill, Jr.
July 13, 1930 ~ May 11, 2017
Cal Dean Hill, Jr., 86, passed away on Thursday May 11, 2017 in Houston, Texas. He was born on July 13, 1930 in Sugar Land, Texas to Cal Dean Hill and Myrtle Scarborough Hill. The family moved to Houston in 1941, where Dean attended San Jacinto High School and, later, the Rice Institute (now Rice University) where he earned both the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Architecture degrees. While at Rice, Dean was active in the NROTC, and upon graduation began 2 years of active duty service in the Navy, based in Charleston, South Carolina. During the 2 weeks between graduation from Rice and reporting for duty in Charleston, he married the love of his life, Virginia Lee Smith. After completion of his active service, he and Gini returned to Houston to raise a family, and Dean to begin his career in Architecture. He remained in the Naval Reserve until retiring in 1983 after 30 years of service and attaining the rank of Captain.

Dean was active in Naval organizations, both local and national, for the remainder of his life, including a stint as commander of the Texas Chapter of the Naval Order of the United States. In his professional life, Dean was a long time member of the American Institute of Architects, active in local AIA chapter affairs, and practiced with various firms in Houston for a long career, only fully retiring in his mid-70's.

Dean had many interests throughout his life including oil painting, model railroading, bird-watching, hunting and fishing. In his younger years he was both a golfer and avid amateur baseball player, and remained a devoted baseball fan his entire life.

Dean is survived by his beloved wife of almost 64 years, Virginia (Gini) Smith Hill; his children, Cal Dean Hill, III, Howard Hill and wife Sherry, Elaine Hill and husband Matt Hauser; and four grandchildren, Nathan Hill, Nicholas Hill, Alyssa Hauser and Jason Hauser.

A visitation is planned for Wednesday, May 17 from 6 – 8 PM at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Rd., Houston, Texas. Following a graveside service for the family, there will be a Memorial Service on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 2 PM, to be held at the Clarewood House Chapel, 7400 Clarewood Dr., Houston, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the American Veterans Association (AmVets), or to a charitable organization of your choice.

Billy,

I want to especially thank you for posting the item on the passing of Dean Hill. He and I were both members of the same Naval Reserve group in Houston, (NRSD 8-91) and later, both crew members on the Haynsworth. Coincidentally, we were both architects and worked in the same office in Houston -- at CRS Architects. I remember Dean fondly as a fine gentlemen and a very capable Naval officer. I always enjoyed getting underway with him and have fond memories of training cruises on the Haynsworth with him.

Like the ship, we're all getting older now and death notices of old friends are common readings. It's hard to believe that our time on the Haynsworth was nearly 50 years ago.

Thank you very much for what you do to keep our Association and our wonderful memories alive.

Kind regards,

John Shanahan, Formerly -- RD1, U.S. Navy Reserve Reserve Crew Member, USS Haynsworth (DD 700)
